With 39 temporary installations to date, including series in London, Detroit, LA, Texas, Cincinnati, and Winnipeg, Craig strives to expand the reach of his project. Among his favorites is the Roy Burnett Motors sign in downtown Portland, showcasing intricate layers that unveil the essence of time.
While the magic of temporary installations has enchanted audiences, Craig is on a mission to create permanent installations. Inspired by the historical significance of ghost signs, he aims to acknowledge them as artifacts deserving protection. The fear of these signs being painted over or lost to time fuels his commitment to making some installations permanent.
The journey involves overcoming logistical challenges, opting for weather-rated architectural gobo fixtures for 24/7 use. Unlike high-tech projections, the custom gobos, printed colored glass stencils, cast precise shadows, creating a unique analog experience. Craig’s meticulous process includes studying high-resolution photos, historical archives, and collaborating with local communities to resurrect the past.
The Astoria project stands out as a testament to the importance of preserving historical artifacts. By meticulously researching and reviving eight businesses featured on the sign, Craig brings Astoria’s history back to life. The public launch becomes a celebration of the illuminated wall, evoking gratitude from the community and sign painters alike.
