Whether we like it or not, superstition follows us everywhere. Weird and Shocking Superstitions. We still, unintentionally cross our fingers (and toes and … well … whatever else we can) when we’re in need of a little extra luck. While some of these rituals might sound a little odd, they take place even till today. Prepare to be shocked!

Whistling Indoors

Whistling while you work may be an issue in Lithuania where it’s forbidden to whistle indoors because the noise is believed to summon demons. When you are happy and humming your favorite song or whistling it is a normal act. People use whistling either to get attention or call out to someone or just to entertain themselves. But in many cultures whistling, especially whistling indoors is associated with bad luck or evil. Oof!

Pregnant women should give into their cravings

There’s a Canadian superstition that expectant mothers who are craving fish but don’t eat it will end up having a baby with a fish-head. Another popular korean rumour states that pregnant women should not eat asymmetrical foods – or foods of odd shapes. Otherwise, you will end up with an ugly baby! Now that is one of the Weird and Shocking Superstitions.

Lemons to aid the evil eye

The nimbu totka which is one of the most visible ‘superstitions’ probably stems from a culture that encouraged their use because of the qualities of lemon and chilli. Both are rich in different vitamins and thus our ancestors probably tried to propagate their usage through symbols during ceremonies which slowly turned into a totka. Some people also claim that they have pesticidal properties, but this has not been proven. All over India, we see peoples prized possessions with a hanging lemon-chilli combo. That explains it?

Curd and sugar before an important event

Eating curd and sugar before an exam is what most of us remember as kids. But why though? In tropical climates like India, having cold curd is highly recommended as it has a cooling effect on the stomach. The sugar added in it – before someone is setting out for an important work, provides instant glucose. This combination is hence indispensable for Indians and so its consumption slowly linked itself to good luck. Woah! Weird and Shocking Superstitions!
