Cannock Chase Council and Cannock Police are collaborating to reintroduce well-received bike marking events aimed at thwarting theft. In partnership with the Council’s Community Safety Team and Cannock Chase Local Policing Team, this initiative allows bike owners to have their bicycles uniquely marked and registered for free on the National Bike Register Scheme. This visible deterrent not only diminishes the appeal of bikes to thieves but also enhances the chances of recovery if stolen. The events, set to take place on specific dates, require no advance booking.
The schedule for the events is as follows:
– Thursday, 8 February, 10 am – 2 pm: Birches Valley Forest Centre
– Thursday, 7 March, 3 pm – 6 pm: Ravenhill Park, Rugeley
– Thursday, 28 March, 3 pm – 6 pm: Asda Superstore, Avon Road, Cannock
Councillor Jo Elson, Portfolio Leader for Community Wellbeing, emphasized the emotional impact of bike theft on cyclists and urged people to utilize the bike-marking service and crime prevention advice provided at the events. Inspector Chris Moss, Deputy Local Policing Commander, highlighted the collaboration with the Community Safety Team and stressed the importance of awareness in protecting valuable property.
The initiative, funded by the Council’s Locality Deal Fund from the Staffordshire Commissioner’s Office, received support from Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire & Rescue, and Crime, Ben Adams. He commended the use of the fund for supporting the bike marking scheme, emphasizing its role in preventing thefts and facilitating the return of stolen bikes.
A previous bike marking event by Cannock Police in November proved highly successful, with 38 bikes marked and registered within four hours. To learn more about the National Bike Register Scheme, visit https://www.bikeregister.com/.
