Local seniors turn dark times into 'gorgeous' artwork – Bradford Today

“It originated from my engagement in art therapy across 10 retirement homes. I aimed to provide them with something to anticipate,” shared Lisa Harpell, the art therapy teacher and curator of Stonebridge Art Gallery in Wasaga Beach. The gallery will host the opening reception of a new art exhibit titled “Inspirations of a Lifetime” on Feb. 8, showcasing 16 by 20 paintings crafted by residents from various retirement homes in Simcoe County.

The concept took shape during the pandemic as Harpell sought to bring positivity to the lives of the retirement home residents. This marks the second year of the exhibit, building on the success of its inaugural run. While some paintings will be available for purchase, Harpell notes that, similar to last year, families of the artists may express early interest in acquiring the artwork.

“Last year, I gathered all their paintings, coordinating 120 works of art. Families showed significant interest,” Harpell mentioned. The residents draw inspiration from their life experiences, relationships, family, and emotions.

Often, Harpell encourages them to reflect on a specific moment or place in their lives that they wish to capture. “Many clients were truly connecting with it on a personal level,” she added. Witnessing the impact on the residents and the emotions these artworks evoke is a remarkable experience.

“It enriches their lives,” emphasized Harpell. The opening reception for the “Inspirations of a Lifetime” exhibit at Stonebridge Art Gallery is scheduled for Feb. 8 from 1 to 4 p.m., featuring light refreshments. The exhibit will be open until March 31, offering a unique glimpse into the artistic expressions of retirement home residents in Simcoe County.
