In February, Black History Month will be commemorated through a series of engaging events in Cambridge. Presented by Rhythm and Blues Cambridge in collaboration with the City of Cambridge, Idea Exchange, the K-W Multicultural Centre, and Kinbridge, the fifth edition of Black History Month aims to highlight the achievements and contributions of African Canadian communities in Cambridge and across Canada.
This annual event offers a distinctive perspective on how the Black communities in Waterloo Region have played a pivotal role in shaping history. The program encompasses discussions on Black history, art, culture, joy, wellness, and resistance.
Cambridge Mayor Jan Liggett emphasized the significance of celebrating Black History Month, recognizing the profound impact of the Black community on the city and the country. The events invite participants to honor and celebrate the resilience of the Black community by fostering awareness and understanding, combating racism and discrimination, and creating a sense of belonging for all residents.
The event schedule includes:
- Saturday, Feb. 3, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — Art from the Heart Processing
- Sunday, Feb. 11, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Hair Joy: Celebrating our kinks, our coils, our curls hair workshop
- Saturday, Feb. 17, 1 to 5 p.m. — The Black Love Treatment
- Saturday, Feb. 24, noon to 4 p.m. — Black History Month Celebration
The funding for these events has been made possible through contributions from the Kitchener-Waterloo Community Foundation, Region of Waterloo Upstream fund, Lyle S. Hallman Foundation, and the City of Cambridge.
